Coffee beans: Robusta versus Arabica

Coffee, or Coffea in scientific terms, is part of a family of flowering plants called Rubiaceae. The seeds of these Coffea species are what we know as coffee beans.

There are over 120 species of Coffea, but the beans we use to make the drink fall into two main types: Arabica and Robusta. Arabica has a smoother and sweeter taste, while Robusta contains nearly double the caffeine content and has a more bitter taste. Robusta is usually used in espresso blends because it creates a better foam layer on the top of an espresso shot.

Many coffee makers blend Robusta with Arabica to create their own unique flavors. The quality of the coffee is dependent on the proportions of the mix of these beans.

Robusta coffee is reported to make up about 97 percent of Vietnam's total coffee production.
